THE HIGH GETS ME LOW

THE HIGH GETS ME LOW
by matt burns

I do have the capacity
To arrive at the highest level of truth
But this doesn't happen
When I fill myself with low substances
Like caffeine
              Nicotine
                        Alcohol
                                   Junk
                                         Food
                                                Et
                                                  Al

I consume the low to get me high
But the higher I get
The further I
                   get
                       from
                              the
                                 tru
                                    t

WHAT THE DEMON WANTS

WHAT THE DEMON WANTS
by matt burns

The demon wants
A perpetual state
Of seeking
And searching
For revenge
For retaliation
For closure
For justice

It will set up situations
Where there's
No
Hope
Of obtaining
Any of the above

You have to rise above it all
And not seek
Or search
For any of it
Even when you're convinced
You deserve
It
All

If you keep seeking
And searching
Forever
The demon
Eats away at you
With nasty maggots
And worms
You decompose
Rot to pieces
And the
Creepy
Crawly
Demon

MY APPEARANCE ON "WRITER'S INFUSION"

This is non-poetry related but I just wanted to post my recent guest-appearance on the webisode series WRITER'S INFUSION. Basically what happens is I read the first five pages of my novel BLOWTORTURE and then I'm critiqued by a panel of judges, American Idol-style. Check it out!

CALLUSED HANDS

CALLUSED HANDS
by matt burns

It's the first time my hands have been callused
They have always been so fair and smooth
And it was always embarrassing
A man's hands shouldn't be so delicate

But lately I've been doing a new kind of labor
And making good money
My hands are rough and callused from it
And Miss America wants to lick them
Then insert them into her vagina
Because she lusts for callused hands

In the meantime
My soul's calluses have healed
The soul's delicate now
And fair
Smooth

I've stopped callusing my soul
And opted instead
To put calluses on the flesh

Some might say that this is called death

PROBABLY NOT FUNCTIONAL

PROBABLY NOT FUNCTIONAL
by matt burns

The difference between
Functional
Alcoholic
And dysfunctional
Alcoholic
Is hard to decipher

I keep on telling us
We're functional
We's sip
And we's get shit done
We're never messy
It doesn't make us useless

But let's stops kidding ourselves's
It slows us down
We're foggy the next day
Our brain is never working at it's best
And also
Most of the time
We drink
And just stare at the computer screen
And listen to music
Like we were just doing before we wrote this poem

We pretend we're having a deep experience
But we never really do
We pretend
But we never do
Pretend
Never
Do
